Malleswaram Food Walk
Scheduled For: Every Day
(10:00 AM - 12:30 PM )
This is a 2-hour walk to explore the residential and bazaar neighbourhood of Malleswaram. This area is home to ‘upper-caste’ Kannada and Tamil speaking families, many of whom are long-time residents. The market reflects the food traditions of these communities; offering a glimpse into authentic vegetarian South Indian cuisine. In addition, this area also has a busy market offering a wide range of clothing, kitchen implements and prayer paraphranelia. It attracts many people from other parts of Bangalore and you will find many shops selling snacks and popular street food to cater to shoppers.
Tour begin at the temple of Kaadu Malleswara, the patron deity of this neighbourhood. Accompanied by a knowledgeable foodie, we will then walk through the market (the main thoroughfare as well as tiny by-lanes) to explore its culinary delights. There are a wide variety of shops selling fruits and vegetables, spice powders, coffee, papads, ghee, pickles and condiments. Your food-guide will explain how these are used in the cuisine, and will answer any questions you have. We'll stop at a couple of eateries to sample the offerings (snacks, both savoury and sweet, are very popular here).
